OWEN WINGRAVE

Tenerife Opera presents Owen Wingrave, Benjamin Britten's opera in two acts tells the story of a young man who rejects his family's military heritage, refusing a future focused on the military. These performances mark the Spanish premiere of this opera.

Owen says “no” to war in a family that has said “yes” to it for generations without question. His decision to break the cycle of violence places him on the margins, makes him a problem, a traitor. No one wants to hear his ethics; they only want him to obey. It is the story of an individual who, in times of conflict and warmongering rhetoric, dares to stand outside the consensus. The walls of the house, laden with portraits and military glory, become an echo of a system that refuses to change. Faced with the clamor of tradition, his conscience is left alone.

This opera is performed sung in English with surtitles in Spanish and English.
